Summer Projects Assistant - Marketing & Graphic Design

 

The Office of Residence Education & Programs (OREP) provides a myriad of academic, social and leadership programs that help students transition to university life, build connections with others, and develop life skills outside the classroom. Responsibilities

The Summer Student Projects Assistant – Marketing & Graphic Design works with OREP, the Residence Life Management Team (RLMT), and Housing’s Marketing Team to assist in graphic design and visual asset development for projects as outlined below and new projects that emerge over the summer months. The incumbent will create and design print and digital marketing materials, including but not limited to posters, brochures, booklets, social graphics, newsletters, planning materials, videos, etc. The incumbent will also liaise with key partners on campus and within the residence system to coordinate efforts to develop creative and effective programs, student leadership training input, and program materials. The project outcomes aim to support the programming and leadership efforts of the Residence Staff, Sophs and Residents’ Councils as well as senior Housing leaders. The Summer Student Projects Assistant – Marketing & Graphic Design is required to review current programming and curriculum materials, update information and produce effective results in the specific project areas. Specific accountabilities include: 

Use design skills to update and produce a print-ready Residence Soph Field Guide with the Associate Director, Residence Engagement, the Residence Orientation Coordinator, and the Student Projects Assistant – Orientation 

Develop and design materials, including booklets, brochures, posters, newsletters, advertisements, planning materials, nametags, and other materials  

Develop and plan the Residence-Based Day Program with the Residence-Based Day Committee  

Support Associate Director, Residence Engagement, ROC, and Head Sophs with Orientation Week design projects  

Plan and create effective visual solutions in print and electronic media using color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print and layout techniques to support projects for the academic year 

Liaise with Curriculum Committee to redesign and update the Community Development Model for Residence Staff 

Liaise with Programming Coordinator(s) to design Living-Learning Community recruitment materials 

Assist with the creation of materials for student leader recruitment 

Design posters, engagement strategies and social media advertisements for current events and issues in residence 

Support student leaders with graphic design support and engagement strategies for their building-specific Instagram accounts (e.g., westernuelginhall) 

Create poster templates on Canva for popular residence programs that Residence Staff and Residents’ Councils may plan (e.g., Sex Toy Bingo) 

Assist with the creation of Residence Student Leader Training. Tasks could include assisting with: 

Session materials & theme development 

Welcome packages 

Welcome reception 

Newsletter 

Update and develop departmental presentations and materials 

Work with the OREP Administrative Coordinator to update programming posters and supplies  

Assist with summer conference groups 

Assist the Residence Life Management Team in achieving their design-related summer planning and program goals. 

Support summer initiatives such as Summer Academic Orientation, Community Connections, Soph Retreat, etc. 

Other summer project priorities as they arise. 

The work week is 35 hours at a rate of $15.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay). Flexible hours are required, successful candidates will be required to work evenings and weekends from August 21st -September 12th, 2022.

The Summer Student Projects Assistant – Marketing & Graphic Design reports to the Residence Training Coordinator.          

QUALIFICATIONS:  

The Summer Student Projects Assistant – Marketing & Graphic Design position is open to senior students returning to Western in the fall as a full-time student. A strong working knowledge of Western’s Residence Life system is beneficial. Excellent writing skills, creativity, demonstrated project management and organizational skills are required. Ideal candidates are experienced Residence Staff  and student leaders (Residents’ Council Executive & Soph Leadership Teams) who have demonstrated exemplary programming skills and have an interest in pursuing a career in Residence Life. The incumbent works best within a team environment and is insightful with regards to the varying needs of Residence Staff, Residents’ Councils, Sophs, and the Residence Life system.  

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability in producing print and electronic media using colour, type, illustration, photography, animation and various print and layout techniques. As well, the Summer Students Projects Assistant – Graphics, will have an excellent knowledge of presentation and page-layout software, word processing, and graphics development, including proficiency in Graphic Design (Adobe Creative Suite- Photoshop, Canva and InDesign) software.
