Software/Controls Engineer

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate
    • Work from project inception to create unique solutions for complex problems with the mechanical and electrical design team
  • Create
    • Build and implement new software solutions and applications in new product offerings
    • Design, analyze, program and debug new products with well detailed code following industry methods and guidelines
    • PCB design and integration into product platform
    • Develop software, modifying software to fix errors, adapt it to new hardware, improve its performance, or upgrade interfaces
    • Develop robot application programming where applicable
    • Develop data visualization and logging applications
  • Integrate
    • Research state-of-the-art controls hardware and software, such as PLC, HMI, etc.  and identify the best fit for a given task
    • Design controls, sensing, and mechanical hardware into a functioning system to fully realize the design team’s vision
  • Verify and Validate
    • Write engineering specifications and test protocols
    • Install offline program into machines to troubleshoot IO, communications, machine function (with machine build team) errors and faults that occur within the program
    • Test prototypes for functionality and performance and implement improvements based on test results
    • Test and troubleshoot new and existing product designs and providing innovative software solutions
    • Debugging and improving of PLC, HMI, machine, data tracking functions and robot applications
    • Testing and interfacing between equipment, setting up communications between devices, performing I/O checks and completing system performance tests
  • Service
    • Occasionally visit customer facilities to service machines and troubleshoot any persistent issues

Required Qualifications and Experience:
  • A Degree or Mechatronics, Software, Electrical, Controls or Robotincs Engineering with some industry experience
  • Knowledge of PLC and HMI programming (Omron, Allen Bradley, Siemens)
  • Knowledge of electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Knowledge of software development related to motion, mapping, movement and other applications related to AGVs and AMRs
  • Knowledge and experience working on data visualization/logging, robot and vision systems, and programming of other sub-systems beneficial
  • Familiarity with various programming languages and development platforms
  • Proficient operating in the metric system and use of metric tools
  • Understanding and awareness of Ontario and Canadian Electrical Code and Electrical Circuits
  • Understanding and awareness of CSA guarding, CSA Safety Standards, and Robot Safety Standards
