Fibre Optics Planner

Start.ca is looking to add a versatile Fibre Planning Partner to join Fibre team. The Fibre Planning Partner is responsible for the fiber optic route survey, duct or aerial cable route planning, splice closure placement, and detailed designs for these buried or aerial outside plant fiber projects.  The Fiber Planning Partner is also responsible for planning and designing the associated ducts, vaults, or pole attachments for the fiber optic project. Once the designs are finalized, the Fiber Planning Partner is responsible for preparing the permit and construction drawings for the outside plant projects using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. The Fibre Planner will work closely with members from the Fibre Infrastructure Team to provide support on fibre construction and infrastructure projects within the city of London, Ontario. Along with the responsibilities and requirements specific to this role, you are also expected to abide by and encourage Start’s Code of Conduct, helping to strengthen our trusting and positive work environment.

 

What you’ll be doing:

Completing field surveys of fiber routes and select optimum aerial or buried outside plant routes to meet the project requirements.
Planning and designing fiber optic cable, splice closure placements, and associated civil infrastructure that is cost effective and meets the project requirements.  
Creating high quality, detailed CAD drawings from concept to final design, drawn to scale to convey the necessary information required for approval.
Providing cost effective fiber optic outside plant designs that adhere to internal design standards and meet municipal standards, and can be implemented and constructed in an efficient manner.
Working closely with the Fibre Implementation Manager regarding project work, designs, and fibre strategies.
Developing, supporting, and mentoring fellow team members by providing feedback and coaching of fiber optic outside plant designs that helps improve performance of the team. Conducting field surveys and site verifications of design drawings, providing input and recommendations where necessary.
Other appropriate responsibilities relevant to the role today and the role as it may evolve.


What we are looking for:

Degree/Diploma in Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, CAD Design, a related program of study, or equivalent experience.
3-5 years of experience with fiber optic outside plant planning and design.
Fully experienced in AutoCAD in a civil/municipal utility based environment.
Excellent teamwork and team building skills coupled with the ability and passion to support others, provide peer coaching, and share ideas within the team.
Strong knowledge of and experience with the following:
   o Fiber optic outside plant design
   o AutoCAD LT or AutoCAD Civil 3D. 
   o Drafting base plans from manual and electronic surveys.
   o Underground municipal standards, services, and utilities. 
   o CSA and municipal right-of-way processes.
Extremely attentive to detail with the ability to effectively asses and prioritize multiple, simultaneous, high urgency tasks.
Strong communicator with the ability to build trusting relationships, both internally and externally, quickly and effectively.
Well-developed analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills in order to implement creative solutions to design problems.
Able to perform computer work, including typing and other fine motor movements for up to 80% of each shift.
Motivated self-starter with a passion for life-long learning.
Previous experience within the telecommunications industry is considered an asset.
Valid G driver’s license (site work is involved) and able to provide a driver’s abstract.
