Western Research, under the leadership of the Vice-President (Research), is responsible for ensuring that Western has vibrant and growing interaction with various sources of research funding and that the faculties have increasing funding for their research programs. It is also responsible to ensure a healthy flow of technology resulting from Western research to the commercial world thereby creating jobs, increasing economic development and the general betterment of society. 

About Us

Innovation and Strategic Partnerships unites the Western Technology Transfer Office (TTO), Strategic Partnerships, and Western Research Parks, driving the impact of Western's research by fostering connections between research, industry, and communities.  
As a Business Intelligence Associate (BIA), you will support a small group of Commercial IQ participants to develop plans to commercialize their research.  Commercial IQ is jointly run by the Western TTO and Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship (MIFE). 

Responsibilities

  • Assist participants with problem statement development, customer validation, and business planning
  • Conduct market research and competitive analysis to support participant deliverables
  • Assist in applying business frameworks (Business Model Canvas, go-to-market strategy, financial planning) to early-stage technologies
  • Meet regularly with assigned participants throughout the program
  • Provide feedback to program managers
  • Support participants preparing for final pitch competition
Qualifications:
  • Preference will be given to students in science-based programs (e.g., Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related Life Sciences).
  • Students in Business programs with current or prior experience in the sciences are encouraged to apply.
  • Students enrolled in combined Science and Business programs are also encouraged to apply.
Other Requirements:
  • Technical knowledge in science related fields with some business understanding
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Previous experience preparing business pitches 
  • Self-motivated and self-disciplined with a "can-do" attitude
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Familiar  with database searching
  • Familiar with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
