Job Details

Reporting to the Manager of Database Operations, the Database Operations Engineer will develop and deploy data structures supporting operational and analytical databases. You will work closely with our Database Administrators, to contribute to the design and implementation of data structures to facilitate the loading, transforming, and availability of data for analysis and product development. You will also support operational teams in maintaining and resolving data inconsistencies and compliance issues. You will be asked to lead, manage, assess, and implement structure, process, and monitoring of our database systems and ETL systems. Providing feedback to all teams will be key to your team’s continuous improvement. You will be required to learn, research, pilot and recommend new tools and technologies that can be leveraged to improve the way we work.

Position Responsibilities

• Assist with investigating and implementing an ETL solution to improve the reliability of ingesting data into our databases
• Administer our database infrastructure in the Azure public cloud (Virtual Machines, SQL Server, Azure SQL as a Service, and SQL Managed Instances)
• Advise on, and implement, best practices for monitoring, logging, and alerting
• Regularly review intensive queries and provide recommendations to the development team(s) to improve performance
• Regularly review index performance
  • Delete indexes that aren’t being used, or being used infrequently
  • Defragment and/or reorganize indexes to ensure they continue to perform well
  • Create and combine indexes to improve performance
• Support the finance team with monthly billing activities
• Create, maintain, support, and deploy ETL packages for data source intake
• Provide assistance to the data and development teams to utilize data from our providers
• Assist the data team by providing recommendations and optimization techniques to their reports
• Review, automate and deploy schema changes as well as document new and existing schema objects
• Provision new services in Azure public cloud
• Maintain compliance with our backup policies/strategies and help refine disaster recovery plans
• Support and manage both production and non-production environments
• Maintain database security to meet the needs of the business, without blocking progress
• Tier 3 support for database/system issues

Education and Experience Required:
 

• 4+ years of experience as a database administrator or engineer
• Experience with Azure Data Factor, Azure Synapse or SISS Package Development
• Experience with CI/CD preferred
• Experience managing MS SQL database servers used by .NET applications
• Proficiency with Azure SQL Services
• Previous experience working in an Agile environment
