Job Details
We’re seeking a skilled and experienced in-house Legal Counsel to join our team! The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing our legal landscape, ensuring our organization remains compliant with all legal requirements, while providing legal advice and support to the organization, working across various teams. This position requires a deep understanding of Canadian legal frameworks, particularly in commercial, contract and privacy law.  Position Responsibilities
  • Legal Compliance: Monitor and ensure adherence to all relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Contracts: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts and legal documents, including vendor agreements, customer contracts, confidentiality agreements, and employment agreements.
  • Privacy and Data Governance: Oversee compliance with privacy laws and regulations, including data protection policies and practices. Provide guidance on data governance strategies.
  • Legal Advice: Provide practical legal advice to departments across the business. Collaborate with Human Resources (HR), Sales, IT, and Operations teams to support business objectives and mitigate risk. Train and support staff on legal matters.
  • Risk Management: Identify, analyze, and mitigate complex legal risks by designing and implementing company policies and procedures. Collaborate with stakeholders to manage risks associated with business activities and strategic initiatives.
  • Litigation Management: Oversee and manage litigation and dispute resolution process, working with external counsel as necessary.
  • Legal Research: Conduct thorough legal research to support decision-making and provide up-to-date legal advice.
  • Legal Documentation: Maintain legal files and documentation. Develop and maintain standardized legal templates, forms, and policies.
  • Employment Law: Advise on employment-related matters, workplace policies, and compliance with employment legislation.
  • External Relationships: Communicate with and manage any third-party bodies such as external counsel or auditors.
 Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Juris Doctor (JD), or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
  • 8-10 years of experience, with a minimum of 4 years in an in-house role.  
  • Solid understanding of several key areas of law such as contract law, corporate law, intellectual property, employment law, regulatory compliance, and data privacy law as it relates to the data and technology industries.  
  • Strong understanding of Canadian legal frameworks and regulations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and drafting skills. 
  • Proficiency in legal research tools and databases. 
  • Experience within the technology and/or information industry is considered an asset.
