About Us

The Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) Undergraduate Student Services (UGSS) unit, provides a wide-ranging suite of services to support the operations and administration of all undergraduate programs in FIMS in the areas of undergraduate curriculum, student engagement, student recruitment, as well as any initiatives focused on outreach, engagement and retention of future students, current students, and alumni. The unit is responsible for providing high quality academic advising and career services, programs and supports to enrich the quality of the undergraduate student experience in the Faculty. We strive for excellence in delivering the best student experience through a student-centric, supportive, caring, accessible and knowledgeable student services environment, helping students design, modify and achieve their academic and career goals, from admission through to graduation. 

Responsibilities

The Media & Communication Studies (MACS) Student Learning Coaches will collaborate with one another, Learning Development and Success, FIMS Undergraduate Student Services, and the course instructor to design and deliver engaging Supported Learning Group (SLG) activities for students in MEDIACOM 1020E. The program will hire 10 Student Learning Coaches and offer three 60-minute sessions during each active SLG week. Coaches will be assigned across the three weekly offerings and are scheduled for up to five paid hours per active SLG week, including preparation, facilitation, collaboration, and communication. All coaches will also complete a mandatory four-hour training session before programming begins. 

Responsibilities:

• Attend a mandatory four-hour training session before programming begins, as well as ongoing professional development meetings 

• Stay up to date on MEDIACOM 1020E course material and students' learning needs, challenges, and concerns. 

• Attend a weekly meeting with supervisors and fellow Student Learning Coaches. 

• Work with team members, supervisors, and the course instructor to design or modify SLG activities based on students' learning needs. 

• Facilitate one 60-minute SLG session per active SLG week as part of a team of three coaches, with preparation and collaboration completed within the five-hour weekly allocation. 

• Promote and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere throughout all sessions. 

• Maintain ongoing contact with supervisors and team members and respond to inquiries in a timely manner. 

• Discuss questions, difficulties, or concerns with program supervisors as needed. 

• Develop activities that reinforce course content and academic-success strategies, including study skills, time management, test preparation, and effective learning practices. 

• Help plan and create session materials, handouts, and promotional materials to support SLG activities.

Education:

Currently registered as a Western undergraduate student in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies. 

Experience:

• MACS undergraduate student with a strong interest in peer learning who has successfully completed MEDIACOM 1020E and MEDIACOM 1025F/G. 

• Minimum 80% cumulative average, with a minimum grade of 80% in MEDIACOM 1020E. 

• Strong communication, interpersonal, facilitation, and presentation skills. 

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. 

• Strong time-management and organizational skills, with a positive attitude and commitment to supporting Western students. 

• Available for at least one planned weekly SLG block: Monday 6:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday 7:30-8:30 p.m., or Friday 1:30-2:30 p.m (subject to change). Broader availability across the three session times is an asset. 

• Full academic-year commitment for Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 due to the training and continuity required for the program. 

Preferred Experience:

• Community or campus involvement, awareness of campus resources, or prior peer-learning/mentoring experience.
