Responsibilities

The Social Media & Digital Engagement Specialist will collaborate with Western Communications colleagues to support Western’s digital communication goals of strategic storytelling, constituent engagement, knowledge mobilization, brand building and community communications through the use of digital and social media channels. The role will plan and develop high-visibility digital content programs and plans that support Western’s strategies, in alignment with social media best practices and the University’s values and positions. Under the leadership of the Digital Content Manager, the Specialist will manage complex content and promotional projects, consulting with campus-wide stakeholders at a variety of levels, including senior leadership, with the goal of contributing to the continued improvement and excellent professional practice within the department and campus-wide, through ongoing consultation and training, as well as internal thought leadership and guidance to colleagues in addition to a team of student employees. The Specialist will stay apprised and lead their own investigation of professional best practices for creating meaningful digital content and engagement.

Qualifications

Education:
-    Undergraduate Degree in Media Information Technology, English, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing or related program

Experience:
-    3 years’ experience coordinating social media accounts in a professional setting
-    Experience working in the post-secondary sector is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-    Strong expertise with theory and best practices in media relations and public affairs
-    Advanced skills with e-communication tools, including website and graphic design principles, and with social media platforms 
-    Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
-    Leadership, public speaking and project management with the ability to lead digital communications campaigns with a student team as well as internal training 
-    Excellent attention to detail and proofreading abilities
-    Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with public relations issues related to higher education, including proposing nuanced, sensitive resolutions 
-    Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
-    Ability to analyze metrics and consider past communications to craft engaging written communications using social media or other appropriate channels
-    Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities
-    Advanced skills with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere
-    Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
