Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Analyst Finance & Planning.
Reporting to the Director, Strategic Finance, this role owns, executes, and guides others on several processes related to Strategic Initiative & Portfolio Governance. It provides leadership in initiative governance & gating processes, for which it applies advanced knowledge of Canada Life’s Canadian Initiative Governance requirements.
To be successful the incumbent requires tact, a strong ability to negotiate and influence others, and an emphasis on building collaboration. This role also requires a strong understanding of best practices in Strategic Finance analysis & planning techniques, and knowledge of related reporting & tools.
This role enables Strategic Finance to provide valued input to senior leaders for the governance and reporting of strategic initiative & financial planning. This role is highly visible as a trusted partner and subject matter expert for Strategic Initiative & Portfolio Governance.
What you will do
Planning & Governance Process Ownership
- Responsible for several key functions in Strategic Initiative & Portfolio Governance & Gating. Define processes, provide communication & education, drive & implement continuous improvements, ensure adherence to process expectations, conduct quality checks, control gating checkpoints.
- Responsible for counselling & educating stakeholders* on correct application of initiative governance & gating framework to meet requirements and pass gating.
- Responsible to drive several recurring key meetings, including but not limited to: monthly Initiative Brief Review Meetings, adhoc Level 1 / Level 2 Gate 3+ Onboarding Meetings, Annual Planning meetings, and biweekly Planning Lead / Strategic Initiatives Manager touchpoints.
- Responsible to manage process approvals on behalf of Strategic Finance. Communicate outcomes from business unit gating (pass/fail), provide clarity of next steps.
- Responsible to drive initiative brief & business case development, assessment, and quality control as Planning Lead for Finance Portfolio.
Strategic Initiative Financial Planning & Reporting
- Responsible for production of monthly portfolio reporting end-to-end. Includes buy-in for workback schedule dates; extracting data from internal financial systems and partners; consolidating in Excel/PowerBI; analyzing data & driving conversations related to trends/issues/risks; summarizing for exec audience; and communicating / publishing by required deadlines.
- Responsible for production of monthly Operating Committee of Canada ("OCC") reporting and quarterly initiative reporting. Includes summarizing YTD spend, forecast, and pipeline information.
- Support other ad hoc reporting for Business Leadership, for Technology Leadership, and/or for OCC & Canada Finance as required.
*Stakeholders/audience for this role typically includes up to AVP level; less often also VP+.
What you will bring
- At least 6-9 years experience in business acumen, strategic planning, financial reporting, and/or leadership.
- College Diploma or University Degree in business management or otherwise.
- Strong focus on process ownership, development, and continuous improvement.
- Possess a high degree of financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Embrace use of technology (Office-365 suite of tools) as a foundational way of working.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven track record of communicating expectations effectively, gaining buy-in for collaborative efforts leading to shared outcomes, and driving results against fixed deadlines.
- Specialized knowledge in any of the following: technology planning, project delivery (PMI certification or experience), leadership via influence (no direct reports), change management, portfolio management, Sharepoint, Confluence, JIRA, Office365, PowerBI.
- Demonstrated ability to build exceptional, trust-based working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders. Be visible, be reliable, be approachable. It is critical that this role is seen as a partner and subject matter expert.
Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Toronto, London, Winnipeg.
The base salary for this position is between $51,400 - $95,200 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
