We are establishing our new head office in London and looking to grow our team! Candidates located in this region will be given preference.

This job may require travel to Toronto, or in other locations across Ontario for in office days, training, or events.  In office days are typically held monthly.  Travel reimbursement will be provided in accordance with WSIB policies. 

 

Job Summary: 

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President Financial Reporting is responsible for providing leadership and direction in the development and delivery of internal and external Financial Reporting functions, operational activities and strategic initiatives. The role is responsible for ensuring financial reporting, accounting, controllership, and related activities, services and projects are delivered in accordance with established accounting rules and regulatory, legislative, quality, health, safety and performance standards. The role is responsible for providing leadership, structure and process to division staff, identifying and developing improvement opportunities that are aligned with WSIB’s strategic priorities and ensuring quality performance and compliance with policies and practices.

Major Responsibilites: 

Functional Leadership:

  • Provides leadership and direction in the development and execution of Financial Reporting division activities, ensuring WSIB’s objective and goal achievement are supported and that all established divisional processes are in compliance with WSIB policies and practices and regulatory (International Financial Reporting Standards) and legislative requirements.
  • Provides guidance and technical expertise to facilitate the delivery of services, ensuring ongoing work quality levels are maintained, deliverables are achieved, resolving complex and confidential issues, and managing expectations.
  • Oversees financial reporting, accounting, controllership, and related activities, occasionally presents quarterly/annual financial results to the WSIB’s Audit and Finance Committee and other internal and external stakeholders, highlights areas of issue, provides expertise and advice, ensures appropriate support processes and controls are established and effective, and ensures all processes support organizational, regulatory and legislated reporting and filing requirements.
  • Sponsors and directs initiatives to transform and continuously improve processes and deliverables to be “better, easier, faster”, including driving improvements with external vendors, and actively participates in the adoption, integration, and leveraging of the WSIB’s new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (Oracle Fusion) with other internal stakeholders.

Planning and Development: 

  • Collaborates with the Chief Officer and Cluster counterparts to develop cluster strategic and business plans to support the organization’s strategic priorities, providing input on strategic initiatives and priority development and ensuring alignment with overall WSIB strategic direction.
  • Develops strategic and operational goals for the Financial Reporting division, ensuring their alignment with the broader cluster and WSIB strategies and operational priorities, determining success and reporting metrics, evaluating changing priorities, trends and emerging issues, analyzing impacts on operations/business activities and adapting strategies and plans accordingly to achieve desired results.
  • Ensures Financial Reporting division operating and capital budgets are developed, approved and managed, identifying operational and staff budget requirements, preparing budget forecasts and projections, monitoring budget adherence, identifying/explaining variances and discrepancies and authorizing expenditures within budget and approved limits.
  • Participates on cross-organizational committees, to understand broader issues, share insights, lead initiatives, manage project activities and influence outcomes.

Relationship Management:

  • Develops and manages relationships with Executives and Senior Leaders across the organization to understand business activities and issues, share information, resolve issues, support and facilitate planning activities and project deliverable achievement, and identify opportunities to leverage resources, collaborate on projects and initiatives and influence outcomes.
  • Identifies and leverages relationships with key external stakeholders, professional associations, partners and industry colleagues to share information, maintain currency on emerging best practices, trends and/or legislation/regulations, identify opportunities for new program/product development, and promote the organization’s vision and mandate.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with external auditors, government representatives, and outside service providers to facilitate work activities and to ensure issues are resolved and expectations are effectively managed.

Quality and Risk Management: 

  • Monitors quality and relevance of financial reporting, evaluating and auditing processes, best practices and results, developing and maintaining appropriate measurement and reporting metrics, identifying areas of risk and opportunities for improvements, developing strategies to addresss issues and coaching staff to ensure initiatives/changes are incorporated into day-to-day activities.
  • Ensures internal controls, documentation, processes and protocols for financial reporting activities are established and compliance is monitored, assessing changes in legislative/regulatory requirements, identifying potential areas of vulnerability and risk, providing advice to Senior WSIB leaders on emerging issues and implications, and recommending approaches to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

People Management:

  • Oversees the management of direct and indirect staff activities, providing work direction, Manages division staff planning activities, ensuring division infrastructure, staff numbers and skill mix support delivery needs, opportunities for skill development and training are in place and utilized, and performance and career development activities are effectively managed.
  • Provides support to staff and project/committee team members, identifying opportunities to share resources and clear roadblocks.
  • Participates in collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration processes on complex/ controversial issues, collaborating with HR, labour relations and legal representatives to understand and resolve issues.

Education & Experience: 

Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or equivalent field.

Experience:

  • 10 -15 years applicableexperience, including 8-10 years progressive management experience at a senior level.

Technical/Professional Qualifications: 

  • Accounting designation
  • CA, CPA
