This job may require travel to Toronto, or in other locations across Ontario for in office days, training, or events.  In office days are typically held monthly.  Travel reimbursement will be provided in accordance with WSIB policies. 

 

Salary From:  $94,583.02

Job Summary :

The Senior Financial Accountant is a professional whose responsibilities focus on the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. These responsibilities are carried out to provide senior management and the Audit and Finance Committee the assurance regarding the quality of the information that underlies the WSIB’s consolidated, subsidiary and WSIB pension plan financial statements.

The incumbent also participates/leads corporate projects/initiatives with impacts on financial reporting or financial systems to provide specialized expert advice and recommendations to management and internal clients to ensure financial reporting requirements are met.
 
Manage internal and external client relationships; processes and services; establish and maintain effective communication with key internal and external stakeholders (such as WSIB business areas, external auditors and consultants, investment providers)

Major Duties & Responsibilities

1) Prepare comprehensive financial statements and notes and variance analysis within prescribed deadlines so that all financial transactions are accurately recorded in the WSIB’s financial system prior to the release to internal and external stakeholders reports. This includes:

  • preparation and validation of financial statements and notes for review by Senior Management
  • preparation of journal entries and reconciliations.
  • preparation of support information and explanations for consolidated financial reports, subsidiary reports for management review.
  • preparation of variance analyses and explanation of financial results
  • liaising with external auditors and other external parties through the preparation of supporting schedules and explaining the process and results
  • providing direction to  less experienced WSIB staff
  • maintaining and enhancing accounting and financial reporting support system
  • defining and communicating accounting and financial reporting requirements, testing, plan/timetables, establishing check points, monitoring and communicating results/progress to management

2) Participate in high-profile Board-WSIB wide projects or initiatives with financial accounting or financial systems impacts to provide expert advice and consultation to staff and management on the processes and procedures required for accounting of the Branch's financial transactions, financial reporting and financial systems to facilitate accomplishing financial reporting and control objectives.  This includes:

  • participate/lead and/or manage accounting/system projects
  • identification of issues, evaluate options in a methodical way and work with impacted areas to achieve objectives
  • provide ongoing input and recommendations on requirements implement approved decisions


3) Review proposed external accounting policies such as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), the WSI Act and WSIB objectives and legislative requirement changes and their impact on current WSIB accounting policies and work with Manager(s)and Manager Accounting Policy to recommend changes to senior management and develop and implement processes and  procedures to capture approved requirements. This includes:

  • issue identification though continuous education
  • Collaborate with impacted parties to gain understanding of issue and impacts and propose solution
  • develop and implement procedures including system requirements for implementation by staff to ensure IFRS standards are being correctly applied.
  • work collaboratively with all teams within Corporate Controllership Branch, other WSIB areas of WSIB  to implement policies and procedures


4) Maintain WSIB financial reporting systems to ensure that they conform to legislative and management requirements and other WSIB system changes.  This includes:

  • table updates, system testing, changes in the presentation format and verification of systems integration. Plan and implement the testing of financial reporting systems as required for legislative changes, changes to sub ledger and system upgrades by liaising with members of the implementation team such as IT and the relevant business areas.
  • evaluation of the proposed changes to ensure that data integrity and financial controls are maintained and that changes are implemented in a manner consistent with WSIB policy and procedures
  • leading branch’s testing program in liaison with the Financial Management Systems area and  IT


5) Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements
 
Education:
  • University completion at undergraduate level with a professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA).
Experience:
  • Four years prior experience in financial accounting/analysis with relevant International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) experience.
