POSITION SUMMARY
The Optical Engineering Specialist will play a key role in supporting Engineering and Product Development for UV disinfection water treatment systems, particularly focused on optical principles and measurement systems. This role requires expertise in optical instruments like spectrometers, radiometers, and integrating spheres. The individual will be responsible for building, calibrating, troubleshooting, and evaluating optical measurement systems to ensure they provide accurate and reliable results for UV disinfection equipment development.
This role is a part of the Technology Development department and will be onsite in London, ON with a Hybrid structure.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provide expertise in monochromator-based spectrometers, radiometers, integrating spheres, and other optical measurement systems.
- Build, tune, calibrate, and troubleshoot optical measurement systems to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Analyze and investigate discrepancies in results between different optical measurement systems.
- Evaluate different optical measurement systems and technologies to identify, acquire and implement the best solutions for accurate and reliable measurements.
- Take a systematic approach to identifying and resolving issues in optical measurement equipment.
- Apply fundamental optics principles and theory, using either calculations or commercial software, to support the design and development of UV disinfection equipment for water treatment.
- Creates detailed and professional technical documentation and training materials, such as standard operating procedures, work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and knowledge handbooks
- Conduct in-depth analysis of experimental data including uncertainty analysis to draw meaningful conclusions and support decision-making
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in science or engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Physics)
- Proven experience with optical measurement systems, including spectrometers, radiometers, and integrating spheres, and other optical instruments.
- Strong understanding of optical theory and principles, with the ability to apply them in practical settings.
- Experience with calibration and traceability, particularly in optical measurement systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, with the ability to approach issues systematically.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, detailed documentation and training materials
Additional qualifications that would be a plus include:
- Proficiency in scripting languages and macros for numerical simulations (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
- Basic understanding of UV-based disinfection modeling.
- Mechanical fixturing experience.
