This job may require travel to London or Toronto, or in other locations across Ontario for in office days, training, or events.  In office days are typically held monthly.  Travel reimbursement will be provided in accordance with WSIB policies.

Job Summary:

As a learning experience design expert, collaborate with Learning Advisors, Digital Learning Design & Development Lead, Learning & Development Specialists, Learning Developers and Knowledge Specialists to plan, design and create learning experiences that enable continuous learning.

This role is responsible for using design thinking and incorporating elements of education, experiences, exposure and the environment along with up to date adult learning principles to design and create learning solutions that increase learner engagement, enhance retention, develop capabilities, improve time to proficiency, and aid knowledge transfer to help achieve business outcomes.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide workplace learning performance advice and expertise in scoping, planning and creating learning strategies that balance customer goals, business needs, and technology considerations by:

  • staying current with learning trends and technologies
  • applying design thinking, continuous learning and user experience design principles to learning solution design
  • establishing and maintaining relationships with business partners and business subject matter experts across the organization and/or external vendors
  • advising on the selection of most appropriate type of learning modality and media to assess and test learner performance and proficiency
  • maintaining linkages with workplace learning and performance industry to remain informed and current in instructional design, learning technologies, workplace learning and performance improvement research and best practices
  • providing workplace learning and performance advice, direction and leadership to the WSIB on learning best practices in continuous learning (i.e., education, experience, exposure and the environment), learning experience design, eLearning, technical writing, AODA and web accessibility guidelines.

2. Apply a design thinking approach to uncover needs, get perspective, capture the employee experience journey, refine understanding of the problem and/or performance gap. Design and conduct client meetings, focus groups and interviews, surveys, job shadow, etc., to create empathy maps, learner personas, stakeholder analysis and experience maps. Write performance-based learning objectives that close performance gaps.

3. Design and create performance-based, end-to-end learning experiences for the moments that matter in training and in the flow of work based on desired performance and learner needs by:
o designing and creating learning experiences that promote learning in the flow of work through education, experiences, exposure and in the environment

  • leveraging rapid, agile development techniques and processes to design learning experiences that converge learning with work by designing learning to mainly take place in the flow of work experiences and exposure, supported by performance support tools in a dynamic work environment
  • writing experience design documents that outline the learning experience clearly and concisely
  • validating learning experiences for instructional soundness and user experience
  • establishing timelines and milestones to inform project plans, work breakdown schedules and reports, adhering to project management best practices and in collaboration with the design team.

4. Design, create and modify new and existing performance-based learning products and experiences (e.g., social learning products, eLearning, audio/video, simulations, role-plays, virtual and in-person instructor-led training, mobile applications, games, etc.) using an array of tools that engage and inspire our audiences by:

  • acting as a content curator and gathering existing knowledge and learning content, and organizing and updating relevant learning artefacts
  • partnering with Knowledge Specialists to ensure the integration and synergy of knowledge products with learning experiences, monitoring for duplication in support of one source of truth
  • assessing and customizing existing internal and external, off-the-shelf learning products or resources for instructional soundness and user experience, ensuring they meet the learners specific needs
  • working with subject matter experts to obtain appropriate content for learning products, and translating their knowledge into effective learning products and experiences
  • creating design proofs, storyboards and audio/video scripts for learner and facilitator materials using succinct technical and instructional techniques for smooth hand-off to the Learning Developer
  • partnering with the Learning Developer to select appropriate audio-visual elements to support content consistent with learning and brand standards
  • creating performance support tools (e.g., observation checklists, learner, mentor and manager guides, etc.
  • creating delivery guides and presentation slide decks with appropriate speaker notes
  • leading the execution of deliverables to ensure timelines are met, including tracking and reporting
  • supporting Learning Developers in the development of learning products as needed, including learner portals, web pages and other deliverables.

5. Evaluate learning solutions by:

  • designing and creating measurement and evaluation plans and methods to measure the effectiveness of learning experiences and learner achievement of performance-based learning objectives and learner proficiency
  • collaborating with peers in the development, administration and collection of post learning results to evaluate learning programs, products and services
  • analyzing and documenting learner achievement of performance results and making recommendations to management regarding the attainment of learning, performance and business objectives
  • piloting learning solutions, analyzing results, determining and completing appropriate revisions
  • partnering with subject matter experts to make continuous improvements on program design, learning evaluation and training effectiveness (reaction, learning and behaviour), as well as alignment to business plans and outcomes.

6. Support the implementation of learning solutions by:

  • designing and facilitating train-the-trainer sessions for clients in collaboration with other branch staff
  • planning for the implementation and/or roll-out of learning solutions (e.g., implementation plans, hand-off of learning products to others for delivery
  • publishing learning products to learning portals and libraries for learners to access
  • piloting learning solutions, analyzing results and determining and completing appropriate revisions
  • assisting Learning & Development Specialists and the business in the delivery of learning experiences, as needed.

7. Coordinate the maintenance of learning programs, projects and/or initiatives to ensure content is current and accurate and aligned to business needs and processes by:

  • working closely with managers and subject matter experts to obtain new content
  • scoping and executing content updates in collaboration with other branch staff, keeping others abreast of changes to learning content
  • performing instructional design analysis or design changes required to ensure an instructionally sound solution
  • tracking changes, updates and edits to learning content and reporting when completed.

8. Champion an inclusive design approach in all stages of learning experience design to create products and experiences that are inclusive and accessible, enabling people of all backgrounds and abilities by:

  • identifying and mitigating issues, risks and concerns in collaboration with design team members and stakeholders
  • writing alternative texts, assisting in setting reading order and using accessibility verification tools
  • adhering to AODA and web accessibility standards and guidelines.

9. Act as a change agent for the design thinking and continuous learning model and all WSIB change initiatives by assisting WSIB staff in accepting, adapting to, and assimilating organizational or legislative changes affecting work methods, activities and processes through high quality learning experience design.

10. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education

  • University completion at undergraduate level with specialization in education or university completion at undergraduate level with a certificate/diploma in learning and performance or instructional design or technical writing or eLearning or user experience design or design thinking.

Experience

  • Five years prior experience in eLearning design and development and workplace learning and performance.
