Summary of Position:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Communications and Information Systems, the Electronics Technician ensures the availability of radio communications for front line emergency fire crews, Fire Prevention Division, Administrative Division, Training Division and 911 Communications operators. The Electronics Technician is responsible for deploying, maintaining and repairing portable and mobile radios, mobile devices, and dispatch consoles and performs regular inspections and maintenance of radio site transmitters and microwave backhaul equipment along with diagnosing, repairing and maintaining mobile and fixed electronic equipment.

Work Performed:

  • Ensure optimal functionality of all radio communications equipment and devices for all personnel of the London Fire Department including portable and mobile radios, handheld unit radios, dispatch consoles, vehicle repeaters and interoperability radios, and smart phone applications.
  • Troubleshoot, monitor, repair, and maintain all radio communications equipment, dispatch consoles, and other communication devices.
  • Schedules all service work and installations required for controllers, base station, mobile and portable radio equipment.
  • Maintain land line and communications between the London Fire Department and external agencies.
  • Perform regular inspections and maintenance of all radio tower site locations, antennas, wave guides, dehydrators and grounding systems in conjunction with the City of London and the London Police Service Communications technical staff.
  • Support the 911 Communications Centre by ensuring optimal functionality of the City of London Radio and Station Alerting Systems.
  • Purchase radio parts and accessories in accordance with established procedures.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the communications technology field, providing functional advice / guidance to the Corporation.
  • Support London Fire Department units with installation, maintenance, modifications, and repairs of various specialized electronic and mechanical equipment (e.g. Firecom Intercom / Radio Headset systems, Four Gas Detectors, HCN Detectors, Bump / Calibration Test Stations at fire halls, Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC), tablet mounts and mobile chargers).
  • Liaise with City of London Departments and External Contractors such as ITS, Facilities, Electrical Contractors, Harris Radio Communications, Hexagon CAD, Bell Canada along with being a member of the City of London One Voice Technical Committee with City of London and London Police personnel.
  • Provides formal training on proper use of radio equipment.
  • May be required to attend a major fire scene to service equipment on-site to assist on-site command.
  • Other duties as assigned within the core competencies.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technician program or the equivalent trade field experience.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing 2-way mobile communication equipment, including transmit / repeater receiving sites, trunking radio systems and digital mobile data units.
  • Must be capable of understanding and interpreting electronic schematics, and electronic circuitry for the purpose of both service and design.
  • Capable of programming and installing Department standard mobile data terminals; experience in using related computer software.
  • Valid class “G” driver’s licence required. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and judgement required for producing a wide range of products requiring a high degree of accuracy and close tolerances; maintaining a small variety of highly technical equipment; mechanical mastery to improvise or manufacture pieces for repair; and judgment to assess and recommend repair / replace material resources of moderate value.
  • Effective communication skills for regular contact throughout the entire Department, vendors, outside contractors, and City of London employees to give, obtain and/or exchange routine information or decisions requiring general discussion, and explanation of understanding.

Compensation & Other Information:

Compensation Range: $70,421-$97,506.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday from 8am - 4:30pm. 

This posting is for 1 full-time Permanent position.
