About the Role

The Controller is accountable for the accounting operations of the company, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. The Controller reports to the Vice President, Finance.


Responsibilities

  • Execute the annual budget process.
  • Implement performance measures that support the company's strategic direction.
  • Provide leadership, direction and maintain in-depth relations with the accounting team.
  • Oversee all accounting operations.
  • Monitor and control financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting in a documented system.
  • Maintain outsourced functions and commercial banking relationships.
  • Understand key elements of the company's risk profile.
  • Ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements and ensure record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies.
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid and accounts receivable are collected in a timely manner.
  • Process payroll on a semi-monthly basis.
  • Ensure required debt payments are processed promptly, periodic bank reconciliations are completed, and maintain a system of control over accounting transactions.
  • Assist in the timely preparation and completion of all financial statements.
  • Provide financial analyses as needed for capital investments, pricing decisions, contract negotiations, and others as needed.
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics, as well as information on cash balances and forecasts.
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant changes
  • Comply with local, provincial, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Coordinate with external auditors as required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in an accounting/finance management role.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the Chartered Public Accountant designation or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including excellent knowledge of Excel.
  • Experience providing and receiving intelligent and constructive design critique in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience mentoring a team.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Innovative thinker and enthusiastic team player.
  • Proven ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Takes initiative as well as full ownership over his/her work.
