About Us

Western Technology Services (WTS) at Western is committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective technology-related services and solutions in support of the campus community. Infrastructure Services, as a division of WTS, is responsible for providing faculty, staff and students with a technology infrastructure comprised of hardware and software that supports the teaching, learning, and administration needs of the campus. 

The Infrastructure Services division is tasked with the design, implementation, and maintenance, of the referenced infrastructure which includes the foundational components, Data Network, Data Center Operations, Central Servers and System Administration.

Responsibilities

The Systems Administrator is a key member of a team responsible for the design, deployment, and support of Western central technology infrastructure involving campus wide systems administration. The role will collaborate with team members and manage the service lifecycle of system administration services and their integration with across other Infrastructure Services service areas. The Systems Administrator will also identify requirements and deficiencies in hardware and software services used to provide customer solutions, and provide advice to customers in product selection, operation, and maintenance.  

Qualifications

Education:
-   Post Secondary Diploma/Degree in Business Technology Management, Computer Science or an Information Technology field  
-   Information Technology Industry certifications (eg. PMP, ITIL, TOGAF, DevOps, CBAP, CISSP) preferred
-   Current Technology Vendor certifications (eg.MS, CISCO, VMWare, Redhat) preferred

Experience:
-   5 years of experience supporting enterprise level server operating systems including installing, maintaining and troubleshooting across multiple vendors 
-   Experience maintaining and overseeing the application of strong security practices for servers, applications and the data housed within an IT managed infrastructure  
-   Experience in large scale, multi-site physical and cloud-based data centers  
-   Experience and familiarity with network concepts and administrative procedures in support of a large production environment 
-   Experience and working knowledge of application and web engine deployment preferred
-   Experience supporting server virtualization technologies preferred
-   Experience with backup/restore technologies preferred
-   Experience in scripting languages such as Perl, PowerShell, Bash and/or Python preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Demonstrated proficiency in setup and management of server operating systems
-   Demonstrated proficiency with server management platforms (Microsoft Endpoint Manager, Ansible, Spacewalk, Satellite, etc.)
-   Demonstrated proficiency deploying and managing servers in cloud datacenters (e.g. Azure, AWS)
-   Familiarity and proficiency with Identity management and general concepts around central directory services such as Active Directory and Azure Active Directory
-   Familiarity and proficiency with implementation and management of both local and shared storage such as Storage Area Networks using multiple protocols
-   Familiarity with relational database management 
-   Familiarity with server hardware platforms – both rack mounted and blade servers would be an asset
-   Familiarity with server virtualization technologies
-   Knowledge of IT Service Management concepts (Service, Incident, Problem, and Change management)
-   Familiarity with software license management (Microsoft Operating Systems, Azure, Linux Operating Systems)
-   Ability to learn, develop and support scripts in languages such as Perl, PowerShell, Bash and/or Python
-   Ability to provide technical guidance regarding infrastructure design, deployment, and support for WTS technology services¿
-   Strong attention to detail and accuracy
-   Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users
-   Ability to resolve problems, delegate tasks and escalate issues with suggestions for further investigation and options for consideration as required
-   Exceptional organizational skills including ability to manage multiple competing priorities, and the ability to adapt to emerging priorities, working to tight time lines with minimal supervision
-   Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
-   Ability to establish and maintain relationships with peers, contacts with access to information,and key business partners
