Job Description

Concept Artist — Full-Time, 6-Month Contract

Location: London, Ontario (Remote) Type: Full-time, 6-month fixed-term contract Experience Level: Minimum 5 years industry experience

About Us

Helix Games is an independent game studio based in London, Ontario. Being indie means we move fast, we all pitch in where needed, and everyone's work has a direct, visible impact on the final product. If you like being a small but mighty part of a tight-knit team rather than a cog in a massive machine, you'll feel right at home.

The Role

We're looking for a talented Concept Artist to help shape the visual identity of our upcoming title. You'll be working closely with our creative director, designers, and the rest of the dev team to take ideas from rough sketches to fully realized visual direction - characters, environments, props, creatures, and key art that set the tone for the whole game.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Translating design briefs, narrative direction, and gameplay needs into strong, evocative concept art
  • Designing characters, creatures, environments, props, and vehicles that fit the game's world and tone
  • Producing mood boards, thumbnails, turnarounds, and polished key art at various stages of production
  • Iterating quickly based on feedback from the creative director
  • Collaborating closely with 3D artists and animators to make sure concepts translate well into the final product
  • Maintaining visual consistency across the game's art style and world
  • Presenting and defending your creative choices in team reviews

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in the video game industry as a concept artist
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating range across character, environment, and prop design
  • Solid understanding of anatomy, perspective, lighting, colour theory, and composition
  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools (Photoshop, Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, or similar)
  • Ability to take direction and iterate quickly without losing quality
  • Strong communication skills and comfort presenting work to a team
  • Self-motivated and able to manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment

The Indie Reality (Read This Part)

We're a small studio, which means we all wear a lot of hats. While your main focus will be concept art, you should be comfortable — or at least willing — to jump in on adjacent tasks when the team needs it. Resourcefulness goes a long way here. If you're the type who can problem-solve on the fly, pick up new skills as needed, and doesn't mind stepping outside a narrow job description now and then, you'll thrive in this environment. This isn't a AAA studio with fifty specialists — it's a small crew that gets things done together.

Details

  • Contract length: 6 months, full-time
  • Location: Remote
  • Start date: January 4th, 2027
  • Compensation: $25-35/hr - dependent upon experience
