Job Summary:

Develop proactive approaches, statistical tools and methods to extract, consolidate, transform, analyze and report WSIB Data. Conduct detailed, in-depth analysis, including complex statistical calculations, to identify emerging issues, impacts and trends to assist the organization in understanding the overall utilization and effectiveness of various initiatives, programs, and strategies. Design, develop and deliver analytical products, reports and/or presentations on a regular or ad hoc basis to CBIA clients.

Provide expert advice and guidance to management on sound, data mining techniques, analytical and statistical methodologies in order to provide evidence based analysis to support WSIB initiatives, improve service delivery to clients, resource utilization and understanding and transparency to external System Partners. Provide specialized technical assistance and advice to other Analysts in Corporate Business Information & Analytics Division in the area of data extraction, interpretation, data analysis and the dissemination of information.

 

Major Responsibilities:

1.         Act as an expert on the Enterprise Information Warehouse (EIW) and other operational and analytic environments  including but not limited to IM Catalogue, Data Hub, PSA and Info Center which includes; data governance, in depth knowledge of the Information Management architecture  and data integrations , EIW transformation  rules and source to target mapping rules. Also, have the ability to develop complex queries and build analytical products and reports to extract and compile data, as well as expertise in using various BI tools and system applications such as but not limited to Guidewire, Cognos, SAS, Access to merge and analyze data from various sources. Responsible for maintaining the central inventory of critical data elements shared enterprise wide. 

2.         Conduct complex statistical analysis and modeling in order to provide ongoing evaluation of the business and informed planning and decision-making related to WSIB initiatives, strategies, services, processes, and corporate metrics.  This involves using data mining techniques to discover relationships and patterns hidden within the data that might reveal areas of improvement with the Health & Safety system, opportunities for targeting and program, service and process improvement; working collaboratively with management, subject matter experts, other analysts and external stakeholders to properly interpret and present relevant business implications resulting from data analysis; assessing impacts of business and system changes on data, information and reporting and initiating the appropriate actions in response to impacts. Lead and participate  in the creation, implementation, communication and on-going activities related to data management and analytical  standards and processes. Participates in data modeling activities including data model documentation and metadata.

 3.        Create comprehensive analytical products and professional reports and/or presentations for Strategy Cluster, senior management and external System Partners and stakeholders on a monthly basis or as needed.  This includes assessing the client’s needs, compiling and transforming the data gathered or extracted into a form appropriate to consume; analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing data; tailoring the report to an appropriate level of detail and with the appropriate client focus.

4.         Ensure data and analysis are methodologically sound and meet commonly accepted standards in the statistics gathering/analysis field. Create DG artifacts in order to align practices with enterprise Data Charter and the Data Governance framework and policy.  This includes assessing different methodologies and determining the most appropriate analytical or statistical method or technique to be used; use inferential statistical methods or other types of analysis on the data collected and to define client requirements for report generation.  Coordinate Data Quality activities with the business SMEs and other areas of the organization in order to meet the board’s internal and regulatory requirements.

5.         Participate in the development or enhancement of Strategy Cluster capability to access, analyze and report data and information.  This includes providing expert advice and guidance to Strategy staff and senior management on analytical and statistical methodologies, liaising with Business Technology Services, consultants and other business partners to ensure consistency in reporting and in the development of Business Intelligence as well as responding to strategic needs and recommending solutions to resolve issues in data policies, data definitions, data usage, data quality and metrics; participating in BI client forums to promote BI and facilitate the exchange of information and experiences.

6.         Lead and/or participate in projects varying in scope and complexity by creating and implementing project plans, including the gathering of requirements, determining objectives and timeframes, create detailed workplans, progress reporting, User Guides and documentation as well as plan and conduct User Acceptance Testing and other data validation methodologies.

7.         Provide specialized technical assistance and advice to other Analysts in Corporate Business Information & Analytics Division in the area of data collection and data analysis and in the development of complex statistical performance measures.  Conduct quality assurance reviews of reports and queries developed by the Business Analyst by reviewing and validating methodologies and outputs; providing technical feedback and advice on the most appropriate approach based on assessment of outputs and methods.  

8.         Ensure data and information are valid and reasonable to the business it represents and appropriate to meet the needs and requirements of the client.  This includes validating data copied or extracted from various systems/sources and/or derived by calculations; validating data by creating new data files; researching data to verify data is accurate; or validating data by investigating errors; summarizing and explaining any issues or errors; matching or comparing data found from various data sources (e.g. Guidewires, Mainframe systems, Enterprise Information Warehouse, Operational Data Stores and other databases). 

9.         Develop and maintain comprehensive client documentation for all reports, tools and data models by writing descriptions of their intended purpose, design, content specifications, instructions, and any other descriptive information that would be relevant to clients, reviewers, and subsequent developers.  Support the identification of business ownership and clear assignment of accountabilities for data cleansing and data maintenance processes.

10.       Provide client education in support of Business Intelligence initiatives by identifying training needs, providing support for any formal BI training, provide mentoring on the understanding of WSIB data and demonstrations or training on how to effectively use data mining tools available to Corporate Business Information & Analytics staff.

11.       Perform other duties as assigned or required.

 

Job Requirements: 

Education:
  • University completion at the undergraduate level with a specialty focus in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Business Administration or Social Science.
Experience:
  • Five years prior experience in business analytics.
