Job Summary

 

Medical Laboratory Technologist - Molecular Genetics

As a member of PaLM, the Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) works under the supervision of the Manager for the Molecular Diagnostics Program in coordination with the Senior Medical Laboratory Technologists. MLTs in the Molecular Genetics laboratory are part of a dynamic, engaging and academically focused clinical laboratory providing genetic testing services for patients in Ontario, across Canada and globally.  As a leading centre in Ontario, our team supports Ontario Health with provincial testing for many constitutional disorders including the Ontario Epilepsy Genetics Testing Program.  The Molecular Genetics Laboratory offers a multidiscipline service supporting oncologists, pathologists, paediatricians, geneticists, haematologists, and neurologists, among others for diagnosis, prognosis and/or directing treatment of their patients.

Staff in PaLM may be assigned to London Health Sciences Centre (University Hospital, Victoria Hospital), St. Joseph’s Health Care, or other sites as required.

Qualifications

 
  • Current registration or eligibility as a Medical Laboratory Technologist with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) with licensure to practice relevant specialties in molecular genetics/cytogenetics
  • Certification with C.S.M.L.S or equivalent
  • Recent work experience with clinical genetic technologies including:
    • DNA/RNA extraction from various sample types
    • PCR (Real Time and Conventional), MLPA
    • Nucleic Acid Sequencing
    • VNTR analysis
    • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)
    • Robotic Sample Handling
    • In silico analysis of nucleic acids
    • Other technologies that are routine or new
  • Ability to work 24/7 shifts
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision 
  • Demonstrated accuracy and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) as well as conflict resolution skills 
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, develop and maintain effective relationships within healthcare teams
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
