We are looking for a Legal Counsel, Workplace Benefits and Retirement
Reporting to the Managing Counsel, Workplace Benefits and Retirement, you will be a key member of the legal team providing support to our Canadian business units by providing practical, timely, and business-focused legal advice on a wide range of issues, with a primary focus on group insurance/workplace benefits. You will work closely with legal professionals and business leaders on a wide range of matters arising across our various businesses, particularly within our group insurance operations.
You will bring several years of experience handling the following types of responsibilities within a large commercial enterprise:
- Researching, interpreting and applying Federal and Provincial legislation (knowledge of healthcare and insurance legislation and case law an asset)
- Drafting clear, concise legal advice, suitable for non-lawyers
- Supporting responses to regulator inquiries
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements with vendors and others
You will leverage your legal expertise to help mitigate risk and support business units in achieving strategic goals. This role offers exposure to a wide range of legal issues and the opportunity to develop deeper expertise in dynamic and evolving practice areas. Key Accountabilities:
- Provide practical, independent and business-focused legal advice on a wide variety of issues (described above and below)
- Develop expertise in insurance products and product development, including contract drafting and interpretation, insurance policy administration, pharmaceutical agreements and general legal support for our workplace benefits business
- Opportunities to engage on a wide range of matters, including sponsorship arrangements and community relations
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Law Degree, Member in good standing of a provincial Bar
- 3 to 5 years of relevant legal work experience (law firm or in-house)
- Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and collaboratively
- Strong communication skills with a practical, solution-oriented approach, including the ability to convey legal concepts clearly to non-lawyers
- Knowledgeable in conducting in-depth legal research, including use of professional research tools (e.g., Westlaw Edge)
- Demonstrated skill in legal drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements
- High attention to detail
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to explain and resolve complex issues
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with experience handling multiple projects at once
- Knowledge and experience with life and health insurance is an asset
- Fluency in French is an asset

The base salary for this position is between $120,800 - $ 180,800 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
