Who will you be working with?

Bach-Simpson is the lead Event Recorder OEM in the North American Transit market. It designs, develops, and maintains various electronic equipment for trains. As the Specialist - Mechatronics Engineering, you will report to the Manager, Engineering and Products and work with a team of talented engineers and software developers responsible for designing, developing, and delivering our industry-leading transit electronics solutions. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, operations, and customer support, to ensure our solutions meet the evolving needs of our customers.

How will you make a difference?

In this role, you will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Perform all aspects of technical work to meet ISO9001, CMMI and Wabtec Policy requirements as our customers and corporate demand.
  • Design, troubleshoot and maintain complex Mechatronic systems.
  • Proficient in the use of electronic design software (Altium Designer and OrCAD)
  • Experience in circuit theory and PCB design principles
  • Solid understanding of circuit theory, PCB design principles, and electronic components such as diodes, transistors, opt-electric devices, display technologies, discharge devices, power sources, and ICs
  • Read and interpret PCB schematics.
  • Design and verify PCB.
  • Use a systematic approach to create processes/documents to troubleshoot boards for Automated Test Equipment
  • Review test specifications and procedures for accuracy
  • Document process in a flow chart using Microsoft Visio
  • Use Python to write test scripts.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, embedded systems, firmware integration, and communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, etc
  • Knowledge of electronic and electrical systems design and programming
  • Programming experience in C and experience with real-time, multi-threaded, or memory-constrained operating systems
  • Knowledge of testing and certification standards relevant to electronic equipment
  • Excellent communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent fault-finding, critical thinking & problem-solving skills.
  • Provides support to business development teams in preparing and developing various proposal materials to meet tight timelines.
  • Support the Engineering Team in ensuring the systems meet all associated design criteria and specifications per the proposal and the contract.
  • Participate in project scheduling activities.
  • Participate in process improvements and implementations.
  • Support the expansion of CMMI processes into Engineering.
  • Continue to improve current processes to deliver more efficiently and effectively for the Projects.

What do we want to know about you?

Bachelors of Engineering, with 2-4 years’ experience in Electrical and/or Mechanical designs.

Work experience, preferably encompassing embedded systems, communications, and programming.

Detailed understanding of diodes, transistors, IC (VLSI, PAL, CPLD, FPGA, etc.), opt-electric devices, display technologies, discharge devices and power sources

Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams)

Programming experience with Python, C, JavaScript, Perl, Lisp, Visual Basic, etc. would be an asset.

Knowledge of Pneumatic, Hydraulic and HVAC systems is a plus.

Able to Travel to customer site for design review meetings (10-25%).

What will your typical day look like?

As the Specialist - Mechatronics Engineering, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Review, analyze and delivery as per customer contracts is a must.
  • Interact with peers, internal stakeholders, vendors and service providers.
  • Communicate effectively (verbally and written) with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Organize and prioritize your project deliverables.
  • Able to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Strive for 100% accuracy in finished documentation with keen eye on details.
  • Adaptable to change, learn quickly and independent.
  • Able to manage multiple assignments and tasks, set priorities, and adapt to changing conditions and work assignments.
  • Manage document revision control and document and technical writing.
  • Able to read, understand, and apply procedures.
  • Able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Use your experience in Manufacturing, Machining, and Assembly in an industrial/manufacturing environment, electrical assembly, and soldering to Create Documents/Drawings used for manufacturing and assembly.

What about the physical demands of the job?

The role may require occasional travel to customer sites, which may involve standing, observing small writing and labels, climbing, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

The salary range for this role is between $72,500-85,000 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands, and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
