The Director of Human Resources will play a pivotal role in leading HR strategy, employee and labour relations, and corporate culture at London Hydro. This role requires experience in HR and payroll operations, workforce planning, compliance, and employee engagement, ensuring alignment with corporate goals.

The successful candidate will drive organizational effectiveness, oversee key HR programs, and cultivate a high-performance culture. Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources & Strategic Planning, you will be instrumental in developing talent strategies, managing labour relations, and guiding HR policies that support business success.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Human Resources Team: Manage the performance, development, and professionalism of the Human Resources team and the maintenance of departmental processes and practices.
  • Human Resources & Cultural Leadership: Assess and propose improvements to the corporation’s strategies, systems, policies, and processes that support the employee/talent lifecycle, and oversee the implementation of approved enhancements. Promote a respectful, accountable, innovative, high-performance corporate culture. Champion operational excellence. Provide oversight and guidance across various aspects of the function in support of the attraction, development, and retention of great people, including (but not limited to): organizational design and resource planning, job description maintenance and pay equity compliance, compensation, benefits, and rewards management, recruitment, orientation and onboarding processes, employee/career growth and development planning, networking and employee recognition initiatives, performance and attendance management programs, and succession planning.  Develop, administer, implement, and oversee adherence to corporate policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct. Promote awareness of and compliance with relevant legislation. Implement workplace investigation processes as required. Guide and support efforts to advance departmental goals and objectives.
  • Labour Relations: Lead and support efforts to maintain consistent, positive, and constructive labour relations (e.g. joint relations, collective agreement administration, discipline, issue resolution, grievance investigation, mediation and arbitration, joint job evaluation, and collective bargaining).  Lead the development of comprehensive strategies for the successful negotiation of renewal collective agreements.
  • Business Partner / Advisory: Establish and maintain relationships across the organization. Oversee and foster a culture in which Human Resources team members consistently and collaboratively provide timely, accurate, and helpful service, support, information, advice, and/or solutions to individuals and teams. Facilitate the consideration of legal advice from in-house and external counsel in decision-making.
  • Enterprise Systems and Solutions: Manage and oversee design, configuration, documentation, maintenance, continuous enhancement, testing, optimization, and relevant enterprise-wide training for cloud-based Human Resources Information System, Time and Attendance, and Payroll solutions.
  • Payroll, Pension, and Benefits Administration: Provide strategic oversight and support to the management of timesheet entry, payroll, pension plan, employee and retiree benefits, and WSIB claims administration.
  • Data, Reporting, Information, Documents, and Records: Manage and monitor the annual Human Resources budget. Assist with the preparation of the corporate labour budget. Design and administer surveys, monitor trends, and analyze metrics and KPIs. Prepare project plans, presentations, reports, and recommendations and thorough, persuasive narrative evidence, arguments, and analyses in support of corporate positions for regulatory applications, negotiations, and legal matters. Maintain confidential and general files, ensuring that corporate records are organized, maintained, accessible, and retained and/or destroyed by record retention policy and procedure.
  • Industry Leadership: Represent the corporation, maintain beneficial business relationships, and advance the Company’s position through participation in external stakeholder committees and consultations.
  • Safety: Ensure personal and direct reports’ adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, IHSA safety rules, London Hydro Safe Work Practices, Environmental Policies, and Health and Safety policies. Ensure all accident reports are reviewed, and corrective action is taken.

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree plus additional specialized training.
  • CHRP / CHRL designation (or equivalent) considered an asset.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in progressively senior positions related to human resources, ideally in a unionized environment.
  • Proven experience leading collective bargaining / assisting as a senior contributor.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment law (e.g. Employment Standards, pay equity legislation, federal and provincial payroll legislation, Ontario Human Rights Code, Labour Relations Act, AODA, Occupational Health & Safety Act) and OMERS pension plan administration requirements.
  • Experience liaising with senior management and external agencies and stakeholders.
  • Professional and effective oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, G-Suite, Adobe Acrobat, HRIS, and Payroll software.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, managerial, coaching, negotiation/mediation, change management, and conflict resolution skills. Creative. Team-oriented and results-driven.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills; accurate and exhibits attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and collaborative cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Position necessitates a high degree of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Experience/knowledge of the electricity sector is an asset.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence Class G.
