Summary of Duties:

The successful student would be joining the Climate Change, Environment & Waste Management Division with the City of London. 

Work Performed:

Attend special events throughout the city.

The environmental information being promoted in 2024 relates to the Climate Emergency Action Plan – therefore, the successful candidate will need to become fully aware of its contents.

The City of London attends many public events between the months of May and August. The City’s display trailer and materials contain both general environmental outreach information and customized information designed for the event. The display trailer is staffed with a minimum of two people and may involve others depending on the size of the event.

The Outreach Intern will have the responsibility for coordinating and delivering environmental outreach campaigns at these events with the goal of engaging the general public and encouraging active participation in our programs. The Intern will work closely with experienced City staff.  Events could be small (a couple of hours) and cover one of two environmental subjects or could involve multiple days and events covering a broad range of environmental subjects. 

A portion of the job involves the creative aspect of developing new approaches to public education and outreach. Testing approaches and benchmarking the results to investigate alternative engagement strategies (e.g. “gamification” of environmental messages).

Assisting other city staff within the Climate Change & Environmental Stewardship section as required. 

Assisting other summer and co-op staff with their respective duties.

Other Duties as Assigned.

Qualifications:

Student must be enrolled in a College/University Environmental Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and/or related discipline program. 

Student must also have:

  • A strong interest and experience with community engagement on environmental topics.
  • Willingness to work at public events on weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Strong verbal communication skills (experience with customer service/sales, education, public speaking and/or public engagement is an asset).
  • Comfortable with starting and engaging in conversations with the public of all ages (adults and children).
  • Ability to problem solve is an asset.
  • Class “G” Ontario drivers license in good standing.
  • Dependable, reliable and works well with little supervision and in teams.
  • Workplace Computer skills – Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

 

Compensation & Other Information:

$23.00/hr

This posting is for (1) student opportunity from May-September 2026. 

This opportunity is arranged to be hybrid. 50% remote work, 50% in-office. 

Weekend and evening work may be required.
