Job Details

Reporting to the Director of Data Management, the Data Engineer will develop and deploy data structures supporting operational and analytical databases. As a Data Engineer you will work closely with the Data Architect, to contribute to the design and implementation of data structures to facilitate the loading, transforming, and availability of data for analysis and product development. You will also support operational teams in maintaining and resolving data inconsistencies and compliance issues.

As part of the Data Management team, you will work closely with the group to deliver on the Data Management roadmap and strategic business goals, while working with other key business units to achieve overall business objectives.

Position Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, configuration, and maintenance of business reporting systems and data warehouses that help the company manage its operational, financial, and planning data
  • Develop and deliver on strategic goals for information architecture vision and standards in conjunction with data users, department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders
  • Evaluate, recommend, and select data warehouse components, including hardware, database management systems, ETL (extract, transform, load) software, data mining tools and meta data management tools
  • Key tasks will include data development, data modelling, implementation, and on-going maintenance and support for data assets
  • Design, build, and launch new data models and visualizations in production
  • Independently design, build, and launch new data extraction, transformation and loading processes in production
  • Mentor the Data team around query efficiency
  • Build data expertise and leverage data controls to ensure privacy, security, compliance, data quality, and operations for allocated areas of ownership

Education and Experience Required:

  • 3+ years’ experience in a similar role required
  • Proven experience in custom ETL design, implementation, and maintenance
  • Demonstrated experience with object-oriented programming languages
  • Ability to analyze data to identify deliverables, gaps, and inconsistencies
  • Proficient in Structured Query Language (SQL), Microsoft SQL and associated services (SSIS, SSRS, SSAS)
  • Demonstrated experience in business analytics/intelligence and data warehousing/modelling
  • Comfortable managing and communicating data plans to internal clients
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, database administration or equivalent experience
  • Engineering experience in a cloud environment an asset (AWS, Azure, Soft Layer)
  • Experience with schema design and dimensional data modeling
  • Big data technology and REST/SOAP web service knowledge are considered assets (NoSQL, MongoDB, HDFS etc.)
  • Experience with Virtualization an asset
  • Ability to compare technologies and make recommendations
