About Us

BioNext is located within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University. Schulich delivers outstanding education, advances high-impact research and innovation, and partners with communities to improve health for today and tomorrow. BioNext is the next step in the evolution of the translation of medical innovations into new health solutions, by connecting the research and technology development side with entrepreneurial education focused on MedTech commercialization. BioNext is a purpose-built incubator dedicated to the translation of medical innovations into new health solutions. BioNext clients may have access to dedicated infrastructure, as well as Schulich’s network of core facilities which represent an array of prototype manufacturing, analytical, testing, validation, and preclinical development services.

BioNext is a MedTech incubator created to accelerate the translation of early ideas to commercial innovations by facilitating the development of new technologies and of the
entrepreneurs commercializing them. BioNext clients will develop their technologies by working with local scientists and clinicians and will develop their business models by connecting with mentors, advisors, and the local and regional innovation ecosystems. 

 

Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies to promote the BioNext and the organization’s partners and mission, enhance its public image, and build strong relationships with government entities. The role will assist with designing, creating, and assessing communications and marketing efforts, with a goal of building and promoting BioNext's brand and reputation locally, nationally, and internationally. The Communications Specialist will assist with developing and maintaining communication processes and practices, crafting compelling narratives, coordinating public affairs initiatives, and engaging with key stakeholders to influence policy and public perception. The role will support grant writing and coordination with various stakeholders across the Life Sciences ecosystem within London, Ontario. The Communications Specialist will protect, promote, and enhance the reputation of BioNext, th4e Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the University and its people by providing professional advice and guidance regarding communication plans and related projects that is consistent with all relevant Faculty and University guidelines. 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science or related field
  • Completion of, or working towards, International Association of Business Communicators Designation 
  • Master’s Degree is preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience working in a communications, public relations, or government relations role in an industry or research environment
  • Experience working in a health technology commercialization, or a similar industry, environment would be an asset 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with government processes with proven experience in media relations and managing public perception
  • In-depth knowledge of e-communication tools including website and graphic design principles
  • Knowledge of communications and marketing best practices, processes, trends, and tools in area of specialty
  • In-depth knowledge of principles of writing, including grammar and style, argument, and coherence and attention to detail, proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
  • Ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
  • Media skills with solid communications judgment to present and package information to maximize interest
  • Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
  • Project management skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and perform well under pressure
  • Proven ability to build both formal and informal professional relationships within, across, and external to organizational boundaries
  • Ability to analyze metrics and consider past communications to craft engaging written communications using social media or other appropriate channels
  • Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
  • Innovative and flexible critical thinking skills to adjust to and implement new processes or technology to the University’s advantage
  • Demonstrated intercultural competency and knowledge of cross-cultural research and work practices
  • Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with public relations issues related to higher education
  • Ability to remain highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and collaborative when faced with challenges
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate BioNext’s events and activities
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and with content management systems (such as Cascade) with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
